Gadgets to Have Integrated Welcome Ads Soon?

If ads on the Kindle Fire Welcome Screen are successful, others will follow

There are a few things which are well known about Amazon’s Kindle Fire. First of all at $199 the company either loses money or at best breaks even depending on which analyst you speak with. We also know the version of Android the device runs is unusual as Amazon has its own proprietary shell around it.
And just like a company can pay to have a promotion on the Amazon PC home page it is being reported that Amazon is considering charging between $600,000 to $1 million for the rights to have ads displayed on the welcome screen.
Will this ad be shown on current Kindle Fires or perhaps a new ad supported model? Well the answer is not known at this point.
This approach is far different than that of Apple who has implemented ground breaking minimalist designs not only on its devices’ home pages but in its retail stores.
But consumers have shown a willingness to be flexible when it comes to saving money. Witness the success of the Kindle Fire as an example.
If Amazon is very successful selling home page advertising and such ads become popular and the consumer likes the model, there is a natural industry progression we can expect.
First off, a question… What company comes to mind when I say Internet ads. OK, I get it – today the answer is Facebook but in general, Google – right? And what company has the market-leading smartphone OS? You guessed it – at least till Facebook develops one, its Google again.
So doesn’t it make sense that Google will want in on the action and will start to integrate ads into the home pages of Android phones allowing consumers, carriers and equipment makers to subsidize the price of the phone with honest to goodness product pitches?
This potential trend is a real possibility and consumers have shown themselves to be very willing to take subsidized devices in exchange for long-term contracts. They also tolerate ads on TV, radio and even their streaming radio courtesy of services like Pandora. Ad supported gadgets may be the next frontier and if Amazon is successful, we may see the market scramble to emulate and/or improve upon its model.

Funny and Fake Facebook Pre-IPO Letter

This email has been circulating and is funny enough to share:A Letter from Mark ZuckerbergAbout Facebook’s IPOMENLO PARK, CA (The Borowitz Report) – On the eve of Facebook’s IPO, Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg published the following letter to potential investors:Dear Potential Investor:For years, you've wasted your time on Facebook. Now here’s your chance to waste your money on it, too.Tomorrow is Facebook’s IPO, and I know what some of you are thinking. How will Facebook be any different from the dot-com bubble of the early 2000’s?For one thing, those bad dot-com stocks were all speculation and hype, and weren’t based on real businesses. Facebook, on the other hand, is based on a solid foundation of angry birds and imaginary sheep.Second, Facebook is the most successful social network in the world, enabling millions to share information of no interest with people they barely know.Third, every time someone clicks on a Facebook ad, Facebook makes money. And while no one has ever done this on purpose, millions have done it by mistake while drunk. We totally stole this idea from iTunes. Finally, if you invest in Facebook, you’ll be far from alone. As a result of using Facebook for the past few years, over 900 million people in the world have suffered mild to moderate brain damage, impairing their ability to make reasoned judgments. These will be your fellow Facebook investors. With your help, if all goes as planned tomorrow, Facebook’s IPO will net $100 billion. To put that number in context, it would take JP Morgan four or five trades to lose that much money. One last thing: what will, I, Mark Zuckerberg, do with the $18 billion I’m expected to earn from Facebook’s IPO? Well, I’m considering buying Greece, but that would still leave me with $18 billion. LOL.Friend me,Mark

The Most Comprehensive Interop 2012 Video Interviews

In case you missed Interop 2012 in Las Vegas and even if you were there – I have some really good news for you. TMC was there and we shot about seven hours of the most important and engaging interviews possible. We have all the companies you need to know about in spaces such as private and public cloud to big data, analytics, network testing and more. We spoke with the small upstarts and the giants like HP, Cisco and IBM. In short we wanted to present you with a wealth of information which you could use to make better decisions in your companies.
Does a vendor you are looking to buy from have a solid plan for its future – the answer is likely in these videos. Do they have a product which makes your job easier? Again, the answer is below. Do they have a solution to your company’s increasing reliance on AWS – something your IT department has little to no influence over? You know what I am going to say don’t you?
What about solutions to the problem of your departments storing information in the public cloud which may be in violation of numerous regulatory agencies – SARBOX/HIPAA, etc.? Again, the answers you seek are below.
Trends can be boiled down into software defined networking, faster connections (40G and 100G), WAN acceleration as well as cloud, cloud and more cloud – private and public.
I have some of the videos below highlighted and a full list in a spreadsheet follows. I hope you find them useful.
Red Hat discusses its new open-source based storage solutions

Cisco discusses the results of their most recent cloud survey – “This is the year of the cloud”

Alcatel Lucent discusses their enterprise UC and collaboration solutions

Comcast Skype on Xfinity $9.95/month - Lame or Cool?

Comcast today unveiled their Skype video calling service, Skype on Xfinity which directly integrates into your HDTV. The beauty of the system is you can make and receive Skype video and audio calls from your TV. Users can send instant messages via Skype, while watching TV at the same time. The only problem is Skype on Xfinity costs $9.95 a month extra. We saw what happened to the $599 Cisco Umi, which Rich Tehrani and I rightly predicted would fail. Rich also pointed to Panasonic's Blu-ray Skype-enabled players as another reason why Cisco Umi would fail. Well, the $10/month premium is likely to pay for the "free" adaptor box, HD camera, and remote they send you. Yeah, that's right you need a separate adaptor box - it's not integrated into Comcast's cable box. As if my home entertainment setup wasn't a spaghetti mess of various devices and cables I suppose $10/month is better than Umi's $599 pricetag and the integrated experience of Skype directly while watching TV is pretty cool. Here's the rear of the adaptor box showing the connections:The service is now available in Boston and Seattle. It will roll out in eight additional markets by the end of the week, including Atlanta and Augusta, Ga., Chicago, Detroit, Harrisburg, Pa., Indianapolis, Miami, and Pittsburgh. Additional markets are coming this summer. It includes a remote control with a full QWERTY keyboard for typing Skype IMs and making calls as seen here:Here's the front of the remote:Features of the HD camera:• High-Definition camera supports up to 720p @30 frames per second (requires both users to haveconsistent 1.5Mbps+ upload/download speeds)• On/Off Indicator• Digital/Optical Zoom Lens With Shutter• Built-In Directional Microphones• Adjustable Clip for Secure PlacementI'm still skeptical customers are willing to shell out $9.95/month just to have Skype on their TV. I have my Windows 7 Dell Zino hooked up to my HDTV over HDMI for free. That along with a wireless keyboard and mouse and I can Skype on my HDTV for free. Granted, I have to have my TV on PC input mode, so I cannot watch TV simultaneously. That is until I purchase a TV tuner card for the Zino! Take that Comcast! Lastly, check out their video promo:

Kodak's Ofoto Another Flickr-Like Disappointment

This past March it was announced that as part of Kodak's restructuring, the online photo-sharing site ofoto or Kodak Photo Gallery will be sold off to Shutterfly and your photos will automatically be converted to the company's platform - unless you opt out.
The email below was sent to customers today to let them know about the transition which is also detailed here. The company will be transferring 5 billion photos in July but in June Shutterfly will be sending instructions to users determining how they want to link up their Kodak Gallery account to their service.
It is pretty incredible that photo sharing has been in the news so much recently - with my recent post about Yahoo/Flickr from earlier today. Interestingly, everything said about Yahoo! equally applies to Kodak but at least the Rochester-based film company isn't a software/service provider so their inability to capitalize on this asset is more understandable.
One has to wonder however what would have happened if Yahoo and Kodak just purchased the photo sharing sites without taking them over. In other words, imagine if these early photo-sharing sites were able to reinvest in their futures without having to focus on integration with their parents.
Would one of them have become the next Instagram? Pinterest? Or even Facebook? Perhaps.
-----
Dear valued Kodak Gallery member: As you know, Kodak Gallery is shutting down US and Canada operations as of July 2, 2012. Your account and photos will be moved for free to Shutterfly, a leading online photo services and social expression company. They offer many complementary services and products found at Kodak Gallery. NOTE: The sale of Kodak Gallery assets to Shutterfly are for US and Canada account registrants only. These changes do not apply if you registered as a Kodak Gallery Europe customer. Your photos will remain intact and our Kodak Gallery Europe websites will continue to operate as usual until further notice. Click here for more details. Both Kodak Gallery and Shutterfly are committed to the easy, safe and secure transition of your photos to Shutterfly-at no cost to you and no actions needed on your part.
Two Get Prison over $4.4M in VoIP Fraud

Every technology which can be used for good can be used for bad as well and that is what I couldn't help but think about when I learned a federal judge sentenced Vinod Tonangi and Harjeet Bhambhani to over a year in prison for $4.4 million in VoIP fraud. They were further ordered to serve three years of supervised release, and Tonangi owes $1.7 million in restitution.Using companies Paradise Communications, Reach Communications and Airtel Holdings they resold wholesale telecom service which didn't exist according an article in the Wall Street Journal. They both pleaded guilty to one count to commit wire fraud.Unfortunately they also damaged the trust level of the wholesale telecom market - and whether this is permanent damage or not remains to be seen. I expect upstart telecom wholesalers to have to deal with more red tape to prove they are legitimate going forward.

Taking Aim and Telling the Truth

A Polycom VSX 7000 camera used for videoconferencing (top) with 2 video conferencing screens for simultaneous broadcast from 2 separate locations. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Image via CrunchBase

I went to bed last night in Paris after just reading Vidtel founder Scott Wharton's transparent post about the video conferencing industry. It's a must read, not only because Scott is a long time friend, and Vidtel is a client and a company which I'm an option-holder, but because it's just plain fact filled.
Having been involved in video conferencing myself, since SightSpeed was a standalone company, and through their acquisition by Logitech, the idea of reliable, fairly priced communications has not been a pipe dream. In my agency we use video every day and have for years. It could be Skype, it can be using Vidtel's MeetMe in combination with Cisco E20s, Skype and CounterPath's Bria, or even have people on other brands of equipment including Polycom and Lifesize, but at the end of the day, we see each other face to face and we didn't spend a fortune doing it.
That's why Soctt's point about Apple is the key though. Apple innovates in areas where the establishment languish. Look at music, phones and now tablets. For video, its no secret at all that Apple is already dabbling in real time communications with FaceTime, and Tango which first launched on Apple iOS devices is gobbling up market share the same way Viber is in voice. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple buys Tango at some point either, or Vidyo, because of their Enterprise market desires. Of course there's also Microsoft Lync that works well for those who like Microsoft software, so one can only imagine how much video calling is taking place there, given their installed user base. Enter Scott and his early on realization and vision that the installed hardware user base using multiple platforms needed to see each other regardless of brand or protocol.
Scott's point about cost and cost structures are also dead on correct. You can cobble together a video conferencing and calling service for a lot less than the "name" brand companies retail their systems for, and likely have more options. Given Scott's Vidtel was the first true hardware agnostic platform in the cloud (I remember using a Grandstream phone on one end and CounterPath software back in 2008) he's already done the math and woven the fabric of video communications together before anyone else who looked up, saw blue sky and put the video switchboard in the cloud. Let's face it. When it comes to video few would dispute that Scott has video in his genes.
Scott's point about consertivism in video is also true. When you look at what radical's like Skype and Tango have done, without backgrounds in video conferencing, just smarts, determination and will, you have to realize that the old guard looks at things the old way. Thankfully Scott looks at video a different way which means more of us will see more of each other.

Pirate Pay Blocks BitTorrent Sharing. Is it Illegal DOS?

Skolkovo or Russian's competition to Silicon Valley has a hot company Pirate Pay which just received funding from Microsoft. The idea behind the system is to confuse BitTorrent clients to keep them from downloading specific content. The monetization comes from movie studios and other content providers who would pay to keep their products from being shared. The idea makes sense but the challenge is it could be illegal to use a targeted attacks on computers. In fact, a number of laws to prosecute hackers may come into play making it conceivable that the movie studios could get in trouble for sabotaging downloads. At this point the discussion is theoretical since no one knows how Pirate Pay works but it presents a fascinating look at the battle between content producers and those who are looking to pirate content. For more check out this article on companies in the Skolkovo region, one on the Microsoft investment and another on the legality of disrupting these downloads.

Plixer Scrutinizer Network Traffic Analyzer Preview

I've been testing Plixer Scrutinizer, a network traffic analyzer product for several weeks now. It's a great product that supports sFlow and NetFlow used by popular routers and switches, including the popular Cisco ASA series of firewall/security routers, Checkpoint, Adtran, Riverbed, and more. It also supports Juniper Jflow and Juniper IPFIX, SonicWALL NetFlow and SonicWALL IPFIX and Citrix AppFlow.Having insights into your network is critical as time-sensitive network applications such as VoIP, video conferencing, and unified communications are deployed. Scrutinizer is an excellent tool to monitor your network infrastructure and pinpoint problems. Scrutinizer can be used to analyze and monitor the overall network health, determine top talkers, discover most popular ports being used, and more. Using the software I was able to easily create customizable reports to determine which hosts, applications, protocols, etc. that are consuming network bandwidth. You might think of Scrutinizer as akin to the popular Wireshark network packet sniffer and indeed in some ways they are similar. However, Scutinizer is designed to monitor dozens if not hundreds of routers across LANs and WANs giving a more holistic view of a large corporation's entire network. Wireshark is great at monitoring raw packet traffic on a local network or even a single WAN link, but it isn't designed to monitor multiple remote routers. Essentially, packet analyzers like Wireshark are complimentary tools to NetFlow analyzers like Scrutinizer.Scrutinizer supports a customizable interface that lets you add additional tabs and then add various widgets to these custom tabs. I hope to have a full-fledged review of Scrutinizer in a few weeks. But for now, here's a teaser screenshot of the user interface showing a report: (click for larger image)

Telefonica Launches Skype Competitor Tu Me

Telefónica today launched a new mobile app called Tu Me, which essentially takes the approach if you can't beat Skype, join em'. Tu Me features texts, voice calls, messages, and location and photo sharing - all free of charge, with the caveat that it uses your data plan more, so it isn't technically "free" unless you are on an unlimited data plan or you use free Wi-Fi hotspots most of the time. The app is currently only available on iOS however Android is coming. Tu Me enables communication and sharing between mobile phones, recording every interaction through a searchable timeline, obviously borrowing some elements from the Facebook social network and others. There are some major caveats with this app. First, this app requires both caller and recipient to have the app installed. Second, you cannot call phone numbers using this app - it's strictly a P2P VoIP app. Seems a bit limited to me. It also doesn't do video, doesn't do PSTN calling, and only works with other Tu Me users. The only purpose really is for Telefónica users NOT to use up their bucket of voice minutes or pay for SMS messages. Whoop Dee Do! This is less of a Skype competitor and more of along the lines of Viber or Whatsapp.More here.

Nokia today released its City Lens app for Windows Phone, an app that is an augmented reality browser. Users open the app, and depending on the phone's angle (landscape [facing away from you], 45 degrees, or parallel to ground) it automatically changes modes - augmented reality, list of locations, and map mode respectively. The coolest mode is obviously augmented reality where you hold the phone up and scan the horizon with the camera and it shows icons where various points of interest (POIs) are located. You can specify the POI category, such as Food. Then you can just tap to read reviews and descriptions, or call to get directions. You can also share your location with friends via social networks, SMS, or email.
Play the video below to see this cool augmented reality in action:

Viber Announces BlackBerry Beta and Windows Phone 7 Beta

Viber today announced the availability of Viber for BlackBerry Beta and Windows Phone 7 Beta. Both Viber for BlackBerry Beta and Viber for Windows Phone 7 Beta initially offer Viber Messaging, allowing users to exchange text and high-quality photo messages and share locations with other Viber users. The beta does not yet include their HD VoIP calling. Some may call this a bit premature beta since Viber is a known as a mobile VoIP app not a standalone IM app, but I'll give them a pass to bringing some early love to these two platforms.Viber seamlessly integrates with the devices' interface, with no registration required, instantly identifying existing contacts who already have Viber installed so users do not need to go through a “friend request” process. According to Viber, "the full release for both platforms, including Viber’s signature HD-quality free voice calling, will be released as soon as it meets Viber’s quality standards."

Boingo Wants You To Connect Safer and More Often

AllThingsD is reporting that Boingo is adding two key elements to their software that lets users connect to WiFi hotspots that are part of their growing network and others which are not.
VPN
Crowdsourced hotsots
Both elements are steps forward in the game to help people connect and get better access. The one fine line that Boingo has avoided though is certifying those crowdsourced hotspots. When I think about credit card skimmers at ATM machines, I think how easy it is to insert a watcher type progam inside a WiFi access point that's not part of a managed operation like Boingo's or AT&T's network where one would expect the company sweeps them regularly for trojans, malware, spyware and other bad things that can harm both the network and their users. With the crowdsourced access points, the risk, IMHO, is greater, which in turn spurs the need for a VPN.
I've neen a user of HotSpotVPN for years and also used some others on various devices. The issue surrounding WiFi and the ability to latch on to users data in the air, as well as the ability to put up rogue access points will only proliferate, just as skimmers have whereever ATMs, and credit card readers are found. With mobile money on the rise, and Wi-Fi hotspots growing in use so people can connect risks mount.
Banks, like email operators, likely will get blacklists of suspected hotspots, just like the spam-cop lists of old that made many a yahoo.com email address a suspected spammer, and even hosted domains at Yahoo of customers. Banks and other financial agencies already use various threat detection tools, some that work, but often slow down legitimate transactions versus stopping the phoney ones. This issue will magnify as IP address lookup is one of them so with Wi-Fi and it's ability to enable Ad-Hoc networks, and the lack of a trusted system all spells potential trouble, which is why the mobile operators are pushing SIM cards to their limit. But the SIM doesn't verify the integrity of the hotspot, so with the VPN, Boingo is taking a page out of T-Mobile's book, as TMO when they had a large number of hotspots in the USA deployed also went the VPN route.
In my mind this is the right step, but not the ultimate answer as WiFi has already proven to be even easier to tap than a phone line....so what Boingo and their operator partners do next is really what matters.

No Surprise-Comcast Topping Business VoIP Market-But Is All Business VoIP Created Equal

Comcast Center, the headquarters of Comcast - nearly completed, photographed 3/14/08 Español: Comcast Center, la sede del Comcast (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
While many in the business of business telecom may be surprised to see Infonetics Research reporting that Comcast, along with Verizon, are topping the list of business VoIP deployments, I'm not at all. You see, back when Comcast purchased NGT, in what was really a mercy take over as Comcast already held a significant portion of the company, I felt that the Philadelphia based cable giant was positioning to be big in voice, including out of their own market, and back in March I penned that cable companies are your next telco.
Well the Diane Myers led research at Infonetics seems to prove this out. The announcement also highligthed 8x8, West (which acquired Smoothstone), Bandwidth.com amongst others.
But all business VoIP is not created equal. For example, one point that is not detailed in the news release is the differene between traffic carried over a public network and a private network that's managed. Just recently Skype dropped the pure "open" super node concept and took the first step of managed calling, by adding their own server environment. In essence Skype is now emulating one giant phone company, for free, on the public Internet. Translated, Skype just became a true competitor to Vonage and even MagicJack, but with an existing number of users/customers.
For most businesses, calls going over the public internet don't really matter. But if privacy, security and control are for you, then asking the question about public vs. managed Internet will be a deciding factor on which carrier you choose.

If you haven't been using Google Hangouts for free multiparty video conferences and presentations, your missing out. Long time friend Randy Resnick at VoIP User Conference has been bullish on them since the start and has begun blending the cutting edge free "on air" service into the communities weekly calls, as have many others.
GigaOm, and others, are now reporting on the news.

Breezing Through the Airport Lines

Image via CrunchBase
Getting through airports lines has become a game with me.
Each trip I think about how do I have to pack my bags to not fall into the "what's in your bag" secondary screening trap? I think consciously about which airports are okay with not removing both my Mac Book Air 11" and iPad from the same bag, and which aren't? Then there's the thinking that goes into what ticket to purchase based on time of day so it makes sense to fly in first class so you breeze through in the premiere traveler line (i.e. Business Select on Southwest, or the better grade of economy on Virgin America, or even upgrade on Alaska? Since I fly the most convenient WiFi enabled route, and don't take on a brand loyal approach I also don't get the "perks" of the elite fliers as often.
That's where carrying the right cards matters. For example, on this trip when I'm in Orlando or Atlanta my recently revived Clear card does the trick. I've also got the new Global Entry ID card which puts me into the PRE check program atomatically. So when I fly Delta and American I can avoid the hassles of even taking things out of the bag or maybe leave my shoes on, but I've yet to try that out, but as an ID card, it works great, as long as the screener knows what it is :-) That said, the Global Entry card really works great when I fly back from Europe into most major USA airports. Now all I need is to be in Nexus and crossing into Canada becomes easier too.
Bottom line, flying in premium classes, carrying a Clear card, or enrolling in Global Entry card, all help speed you through the lines, coming or going.

Ooma Telo Review

Back in 2007 I wrote an article "Ooma goes Booma" because Ooma's claim-to-fame feature was that it worked by 'sharing' your PSTN analog phone line with other Ooma users. I was right that this PSTN sharing feature and business model wouldn't work, so certainly that did go "Booma". However, 5 years later after dropping the PSTN sharing and moving to a VoIP-centric business model Ooma has redeemed themselves with some really cool features. Ooma is a low-cost phone service provider similar to magicJack, netTALK, and Vonage in many ways, but with some key differentiating features. The first big difference of note is that unlike the other three aforementioned phone providers, rather than charge a monthly flat rate for service and per-minute costs for calls, Ooma only charges for the initial hardware - $199 Ooma Telo, +$50.99 for Wireless adapter, +$29.99 for Bluetooth adapter and then they only charge you the taxes and local fees for calls in the United States. They have an online calculator that tells you what those local fees/taxes will be.Sample fees for my CT zipcode:

Regulatory Compliance Fee (what's this?)
$1.78

911 Service Fee (what's this?)
$1.59

Federal Universal Service Charge (what's this?)
$0.39

State and local taxes, fees and surcharges (what's this?)
Details

$0.50

Total: $4.26/month

The $4.26/month x 12 months works out to $51.12/year. This is more than netTALK or magicJack, but less than Vonage. Cost is only one factor in a purchasing decision - features is another, and Ooma has features a plenty. Many of these features you won't find in their competitors. One of the sexy features is the base Telo unit is like the old traditional answering machines - you can screen / listen to callers as they are leaving a message and then answer or ignore the call. The Telo hardware includes a dual-core processor, 1GB of flash memory, and wideband HD audio engine. From the base unit you can press a button to play messages over the Telo speakerphone, skip, rewind, delete, or change the brightness (low, medium, high, off) of the blue buttons. Turning off the cool looking blue buttons is great if placing this unit in a bedroom and you like complete darkness. The base unit also acts as a DECT base station but you'll have to purchase the Telo DECT handsets separately. Using the DECT handset is the only way of leveraging the HD wideband audio feature.Oomo Internet Settings. Note the PPoE support.I didn't test the Ooma Telo DECT 6.0 PureVoice HD handset and it is currently out of stock on Ooma's website. I checked other retailers and it lists for $209, which is a bit pricey. However, when you purchase the Oomo and Telo handset bundle last time pricing was available it was $259. So buying the bundle is the way to go, however that doesn't help your wallet if you're looking to have multiple DECT Telo handsets. The main Ooma Telo base unit can support up to 4 handsets. The main advantage of the Telo Handset is the instant second line feature, which grabs the 2nd line automatically when another person is on line 1. It also lets you screen the caller from the handset, which is useful if the base unit (Telo) is far away and you cannot hear the caller via the base unit's speakerphone. I will say that the Telo's speakerphone is pretty loud and I was able to hear the caller from upstairs with the Telo unit located downstairs. That negates the need for handset call screening in most instances, unless you live in a mansion.Oomo Device StatusAnother nice feature is you can add contacts via the web portal and sync the contacts down to your Telo Handset(s). One final advantage of the Telo handset is the ability to send a caller directly to voicemail with the push of a button, but that's a minor feature.Voice Quality / LatencyTo combat packet loss the system leverages adaptive redundancy. The Ooma Telo system detects packet loss and sends duplicate packets to cover the gap. I made several test calls and the voice quality was pretty good. I performed some latency benchmarks and came up with an average of 0.39s/390ms. It was pretty consistent and didn't vary from this 390ms latency average at all, which was tested across three calls each lasting a 1-2 minutes long. I then tested on another day and came up with a latency average of 238ms (Ooma VoIP to landline) and an average of 258ms (landline to Ooma VoIP), so in addition to the next day having better latency, "landline to Ooma VoIP" consistently had about 20ms more latency than "Ooma VoIP to landline". This is consistent with other VoIP products I've tested where the outbound leg has slightly better latency than the inbound leg. A few more days testing and it seemed the 238/258ms (outbound/inbound) figures were the most accurate average latency.Latency Comparison with netTALK and magicJackFor comparison, the latency of the netTALK DUO across two separate calls had a lowest latency figure of 421ms and the highest latency figure of 449ms, with an overall average of 436ms. This appears to be much slower than Ooma, though to be fair I didn't make latency tests across multiple days. I didn't test the latency for magicJack plus when I reviewed it, so I tested it today and my first latency test came up with an amazingly low 0.123s (123ms). I thought that couldn't be right, so I tested it again and got 0.139s (139ms). I tested it a few more times to come up with an average of 0.137s (137ms). Wow. magicJack clearly was the latency winner.Back To The Features...Continue reading Ooma Telo Review...

Skype Aware of IP Security Flaw Back in 2010

Some more interesting information has come to light regarding the IP revealing security flaw in Skype. Researchers from Inria, a research institute in France, and the Polytechnic Institute of New York University discovered the flaw. Stevens Le Blond, one of the team's researchers who discovered the exploit told the Wall Street Journal that the team first discovered the flaw in November 2010. They were actually able to track the city-level location of more than 10,000 Skype users over a period of two weeks simply by making short calls to users that don't cause a Skype notification popup and the calls don't appear in the call histories. The WSJ Journal article explains:

The researchers say the vulnerability could allow corporate rivals to track the movement of individuals from a company, as they travel between cities and states.
“You can scale this to track tens of thousands of employees,” said Keith Ross, a researcher from the Polytechnic Institute who worked on the 2011 paper, “and determine their strategy and who they’re trying to do business with.”
Le Blond also said the flaw could be used as a first step for hacking into the computer of an executive.

Forget executives - celebrities, government employees, politicians, and other high-profile individuals can be stalked or worse. This isn't Skype's brightest hour, but I suspect with all the recent news coverage, the Skype and Microsoft teams will fix this quickly. Unless of course, there is a core architectural reason why this isn't easily fixed, which I discussed yesterday.

Pirated Music, From Napster to Kazaa and Now VPNs

I was at a conference some years back where one of the panels discussed how VoIP was blocked unsuccessfully in country after country. The point the speaker made was you can't stop IP. Users and developers are always one step ahead, masking their packets in ways (HTTP, etc) which gets through firewalls and other systems designed to thwart such communications.I remember something similar happening when Airlines provided WiFi for the first time and blocked VoIP yet Andy Abramson found a way through. So it should come as no surprise that music sharing which started with Napster, moved onto other services like Kazaa, Pirate Bay and has now evolved to use VPNs.Now the challenge for record labels and others looking to determine who is sharing and what has grown substantially. The downside? Well as the BBC points out, VPNs cost users 5-6 pounds per month in the UK making file sharing a more expensive proposition.Still, when you have a motivated audience with plenty of free time on their hands thanks to record unemployment in much of Europe and the US - it seems there are no lengths they won't go through to share music for free.

Why Samsung Must Have a Successful Media Player

If Samsung is the anti-Apple and with their success in the smartphone space you have to consider them a strong alternative, then they have to have a strategy which allows them to emulate Apple in order to be as successful. By this I mean, Apple has the amazing ability to sell a range of products which are highly similar and yet each is in its own category.
You want an inexpensive music player for the kids? The Apple answer, an iPod Touch. They become teenagers and need a phone? The Apple answer is the iPhone. They need a gaming device on the go and something to help them read books for school, etc? The Apple answer is an iPad.
The efficiencies here are truly awe-inspiring… They use similar processors and other components – especially the iPod the iPhone.
Samsung, in order to compete on the top and especially bottom line needs to do the same. They need to sell millions of music players – entry level devices which are considered iPod Touch alternatives.
Although the company has tried before, their recently announced Samsung Galaxy Player 3.6 and 4.2 are supposed to be the devices which cut into Apple’s growing marketshare.
As Walt Mossberg points out however at 480x320 the 3.6 has inferior graphics to the iPod Touch but the flipside is it comes with a charger, earbuds with a microphone, expandable memory and the flexibility of Android (assuming you see this as an advantage.) All this and you save $50 over the similar Apple device. Mossberg further opines the Samsung feels more flimsy than the iPod Touch but Samsung counters that the 4.2 will be a better competitor – priced at $199.
I haven’t followed Samsung’s media players and moreover they haven’t received much press. So already there is a troubling lack of momentum in this product line. So the challenge for the Korean company is they need to make a device far cheaper and better for them to receive mass adoption. Moreover, at this point many people have gone down the iOS ecosystem road with iCloud, iTunes and myriad chargers and accessories. You have to do something dramatic to win them over.
One Direction singing What Makes You Beautiful

A celebrity endorsement perhaps? Would the cast of Jersey Shore be good ambassadors for the product? I am semi-serious here but I do think pop sensation One Direction could be one strong candidate to consider as they give you the youth market as well as the general pop space and they are new enough that an endorsement probably wouldn't be as expensive as a more established band. Not that Samsung hasn't shown a propensity to spend as much money as needed and more on marketing.
Moreover, if Samsung, Google and the rest of the Android community doesn’t act quickly – it may be too late to compete in the media player and tablet space.
On the flipside, Samsung is able to leverage its truly breathtaking display technology developed for TVs across its entire line of consumer products. This is one of the reasons the Galaxy S II smartphone is so impressive - it uses Super AMOLED technology which is gorgeous.
See a video interview between myself and Tom Chun Director and head of Wireless Terminal Strategy at Samsung discussing the ability to leverage TV technology across consumer electronics products

But with Apple rumored to be coming into the TV business, now is the time for Samsung to look to diversify with more serious and competitive offerings so they can match Apple product for product.

Where the SIP Operations and Engineering Community Converge

The SIP Forum has been evangelizing the SIP market for almost as long as SIP has been around and when you consider the PSTN may go away in the next decade or even less, the importance of an organization dedicated to replacement technologies becomes apparent. Moreover, the Forum will soon hold its second live event SIPNOC which will be targeted at the technical decision makers in the SIP space. The two-day conference, which focuses on the challenges and opportunities related to the deployment of SIP-based services in global service provider networks has attracted technical leadership from MSOs and carriers from North America, South America and Europe including ADP, babyTel, Broadvox, Comcast, Cbeyond, COX Communications, Lumos Networks, iBasis, IntelliVerse, Socket Telecom, Sorenson Communications, Time Warner Cable, TDS Telecom, Telefonica International Wholesale Services, XO Communications, Uni-tel, Verizon and Vocalocity. What many love about SIP is also what they hate - interoperability. In fact the reason for SIP to exist is to enable easy communications between carriers, enterprises, consumers and equipment providers. Many of my readers know however that the SIP irony is that you need a SIP to SIP gateway to connect some equipment correctly. All the more reason for a central organization to help facilitate standards adherence and interop. The show will take place in Herndon, VA, June 25-27, 2012 and you can register here.

Skype Responds to IP Address Privacy Vulnerability

Yesterday it was reported that a simple script could expose any Skype user's IP address. A Microsoft representative saw my article and gave me this official response, which they also provided to other media outlets:
“We are investigating reports of a new tool that captures a Skype user’s last known IP address. This is an ongoing, industry-wide issue faced by all peer-to-peer software companies. We are committed to the safety and security of our customers and we are takings measures to help protect them.”
Adrian Asher, director of product Security, Skype

It's a bit of a non-answer if you ask me. True, P2P by its very nature is going to create connections between your computer/mobile and your 'target' computer/mobile. As such, it's not difficult to determine what IP addresses you are connecting to.However, Skype leverages supernodes for a large portion of their infrastructure. I believe the supernodes handle authentication as well as call setup (or IM setup). So these supernodes act as an intermediary (proxy) between peer1 (your computer) and peer2 (target computer). Thus, I wouldn't expect peer1 to see peer2's IP address. Apparently, this vulnerability leverages the search feature in Skype and viewing their vcard info and presence (online/offline). My guess is that Skype queries the supernodes when searching for a Skype user, but then once it find the user, it sets up a direct P2P session between your computer and the Skype user you searched for and pulls the relevant vcard / presence information. Game, Set, Match! IP address exposed! If my assumptions are correct, I can see why Skype set it up this way. If they use supernodes to also "pull" the vcard and presence information, that's an additional load on the supernodes. I'm fairly sure, but not positive that your existing Skype buddies also make a direct P2P connection with each buddy to pull presence information, which also would expose IP addresses. But if you have 100 buddies, trying to figure out which 1 out of 100 buddies is their IP address would be difficult. If Skype made a technical change forcing each Skype client to pull presence info via supernodes (pseudo proxy) instead of direct P2P connections, that would drastically impact performance of the Skype network. This may be a huge architectural change to solve this IP address vulnerability. However, Skype could simply change their search function to use supernodes (mask IP addresses) and allow the Skype client to query their buddies using P2P (IP addresses can be determined). At least this would block any non-buddy from determining your IP address. I may be wrong in my technical assessment, so I will reach out to Skype for further comment on this. Stay tuned...

The DevCon5 conference program encompasses a multi-track program covering important topics related to HTML5 adoption, including browser compatibility, user experience design and Web 3.0. DevCon5 session“The prevailing theme from Day One of DevCon5 was the unanimous amazement on the face of attendees as they witnessed the animated Web pages they can build using HTML5,” said Carl Ford, event producer at Crossfire Media. “Even today’s most sophisticated game programs will feel the competition from sites, difficult to conceive of today, but amazingly possible using HTML5, CSS3 and javascript.”“The progression of HTML5 possibilities and capabilities has developed so rapidly that even the most sophisticated engineers and developers acknowledge to me that they need to visit conferences like DevCon5 frequently to stay ahead of the curve,” Ford added. With Skype rumored to be working on a HTML5 web app, if that comes to fruition, that would be a huge feather in HTML5's hat. DevCon5 sessionThe next DevCon5 Conference will be held July 23-24 at The Kimmel Center on the campus of New York University in New York City.
Are You Ready for the Identity Economy?

With Facebook’s value being pegged around 100 billion dollars; it is easy to see why many are calling identity the new oil of the internet. And one company, UnboundID is looking to become the leader in this bold new frontier which they call the identity economy. By allowing companies to buy, sell, trade and leverage customer information the company allows their customers to combine this information with others in order to add value to themselves as well as end users.
An example of this concept in action is logging into a site using Twitter or Facebook – end-users hate to answer questions online and indeed many will abandon a site which makes queries which take their time. That’s why a site like Pinterest relies on Facebook to be an identity provider. Of course there are applications where Facebook’s login may not be secure enough such as let’s say banking. But still, a bank could let users check their balances via Facebook or even a Facebook login but require more rigorous authentication in order to make a transfer.
Telecom carriers are logical providers of identity and in fact BT has rolled out authentication as a service. The concept here is that a carrier knows who you are and also has your credit card on file or at least a billing arrangement. Moreover, consumers trust their carriers to be middlemen in transactions such as purchases (think ring tones, etc.) – so it makes sense to piggyback on such an ecosystem like app developers leverage their app store of choice.
And there could be even greater incentives for consumers to share their identity information beyond simplifying logins. For example, credit card fraud is a huge problem – ranging between $37B-$70B per year in the US alone. What if credit card companies gave consumers a better interest rate or other incentives to share their information and as a result were able to work with your telephone operator to ensure your cell phone was near your credit card when you were making a transaction? The savings would be massive and when you realize what a big deal this would be you understand that whole “new oil” reference above.
In a recent conversation with Steve Shoaff, CEO and Andy Land VP of Marketing of UnboundID I was told the company helps its customers acquire new users while also helping the users turn into dollars via monetization directly or through targeted ads and intelligence. Finally they help with customer retention and satisfaction.Andy Land speaks with me at Cloud Expo 2011 New York – as you can see the business has evolved a great deal from last year

They advise a user-centric approach to managing your business. In other words whereas many companies have product silos of customers where information is isolated, you need to align your data and organization around the customer. I like to think of it as a normalized database where information is not duplicated – a customer number is constant and is used across your company’s various products and services.
The obvious question to me has to do with security – how do you ensure this information which is pay dirt for hackers around the world is guarded as well as the secret service guards the president – well at least in the US. I got the answer I was expecting - UnboundID data is encrypted end-to-end and unless a foreign government gets into it and can apply a supercomputer to break the encryption, the information is of little value if intercepted.
Moreover, the company says – and I agree, it is better to have identity information in the hands of a few highly secure companies than spreading it around to numerous vendors you do business with. Of course no system is infallible but many of us would feel safer buying from an established e-commerce vendor with a reputation to protect than a smaller company which may not have the resources to fend off attacks.
The company also restricts the rights of users – making sure the admins aren’t too powerful, allowing them to easily tap into the data themselves. Moreover, UnboundID helps its customers with the ever-changing patchwork of global privacy regulations.
They are looking to become the center of this identity brokering space and have been growing by leaps and bounds while also receiving recent funding. They have established a foothold in the carrier space and are evolving their product to serve the needs of tech and financial companies as well.

Optimum Live TV App now on PC

Update: the Optimum app for Android does not allow live TV viewing but allows you to manage your DVR and check TV listings. The company says this functionality "is coming." Moreover - the app will only work on laptops - not PCs with external monitors. Is it too late to ask for a do over on this post? Having been on Android and iOS for quite some time (see my review from last April), Cablevision's Optimum TV viewers can now also watch TV on their PCs, Macs and laptops. This could be important to power users who have tricked out monitors of 24" or perhaps even greater. In fact the need for a standalone TV may be getting questioned more and more as a result of the ability to directly (and more easily I might add) watch TV on PCs.In order to take advantage of the service be sure to have Windows XP SP2 or greater as well as a processor which runs at 1.6 GHz or better. Mac users will need an Intel Core Duo 1.83 GHz processor or better. Both platforms need at least a gig of RAM as 25MB of free hard disk space.Similar to the way the iOS and Android versions work - you will be able to watch TV, browse listings and manage your DVR but not watch video stored on it.I have been impressed with the Optimum app for TV viewing using an iPad although occasionally there is a connection error which is typically solved by leaving and re-entering the application. It is amazing to me that tablets like the iPad have been on the market for only a few years and already have become the first place developers took when coming out with new apps. It is well known that apps generally drive hardware purchases and point to the direction of the hardware platform market share. I remember having serious discussions with the people at Quark about their popular QuarkXPress desktop publishing solution back in 1990 or so at the New York based Folio show - at the time they said they would never port to the PC. A few years later they changed their mind and interestingly, Apple really started to decline around the same time. What will be really interesting however is when the stats come out from the cable companies regarding which platforms consumers are using to consume video. In other words - yes, PCs and laptops have larger screens than tablets but your PC isn't easy to lug into the bathroom, onto the kitchen table, etc. Of course I am not advocating TV watching in the john but if you do, please spray some Lysol on that tablet before subsequently bringing it to the kitchen table. I'm looking forward to trying the app out this weekend - maybe sooner if time allows. I will report anything out of the ordinary that happens.

Ooma Telo installed - Ooo Look, Shiny Bright Blue LEDs!

I received the latest version of the Ooma Telo along with the Wi-Fi dongle for a product review. I'll have to ask Ooma for the Bluetooth dongle to test since that seems like a cool mobile integration feature. Ooma competes with magicJack and netTALK offering low-cost phone service leveraging VoIP.
I hooked up the Ooma Telo in front of my Cisco Wi-Fi router and in addition to having an eerily similar size, shape, and color they both sport bright blue LEDs. Ooo... Ahhh...
This is just a preview of my forthcoming review, so for now enjoy the blue. You know you like it...
